It’s not that we don’t want you around but we think you should “get out”! The cold, wind and ice is soon to come to an end and we are all dreaming about the adventures we will have once the weather is warmer. The whole idea is to get outside and explore more. Some may think that is hard to do here in Nebraska. True – we have no mountains or national parks, but if you take a look at the state map you will see more campgrounds, hiking/biking trails and water to play in than one would think. So, grab a map, state park sticker, gear and some good friends and let’s get out there!
Start the adventure by grabbing a map and park sticker from the Game and Parks Commission by East Campus (2200 N 33rd St). They can help you pick out some great places to camp or kayak around our state. Most campgrounds do require a park permit. Next, you might need to pick up some new gear or talk with knowledgeable staff about what gear might be best to meet your needs. The Moose’s Tooth Outdoor Company, a local gear shop, is just down the street from campus. They specialize in camping, backpacking, kayaking and adventure in general. If biking is your thing, Cycle Works is just next door and holds weekly bike rides, including bike camping and can help with any bike questions. Not ready to head out on your own yet? Or just want to connect with other outdoor adventure lovers? Check out the UNL Outdoor Adventures Center. You can practice your skills on the climbing wall, rent gear, or sign up for a group trip. Spring is on its way and there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors without leaving our state.
